Gino Renne is on leave through July 20, his assistant said Monday. The announcement comes a short time after news became public of his arrest on assault charges. Renne, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1994/Municipal and County Government Employees Organization, was charged May 16 with first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment after police say he threatened his wife with a revolver during an argument at their home, according to Frederick County Circuit Court documents. The couple lives in New Market.
It is not clear when Renne's leave began, or if he is being paid. Renne's executive assistant, Michelle Weis, said Monday that Renne would not return to work until July 20. His voicemail message on his cell phone says the same. Renne's calls have been directed to Weis. Gail Heath, special assistant to Renne, said Monday that Renne provided a public statement about his leave of absence. She said she would e-mail the document to The Gazette, but the statement was not received by deadline Tuesday.

And you're seeking this Union's endorsement... why?
First, Mr. Renne has not been convicted of a crime. Secondly, a union is bigger than any person's conduct. Congressman Connie Morella also sought their endorsement and received it.
Yes, and when push came to shove, moving to the left of the GOP didn't help her.
You've talked about the "Democratic Monopoly on Political Power" in Montgomery County, yet your approach is virtually indistinguishable from the Democrats who are in power. "Change" or "breaking that monopoly" means doing something substantively different from the people who are in office.
So here you are, basically trying to curry favor with the same constituencies that are working to rob our public treasuries and grow the size of government: MoCo's labor unions, the Washington Post, etc. You've said that you'd appoint a top MoCo Democrat as your #2 should you get elected.
And in this instance, you're talking about seeking the endorsement of a Union that allowed its chief to stay on well after he was arrested on assault, a situation that is all too symbolic of autocratic union thuggery. The man's been at the helm of this union since, what, 1993?
The ability of one person to hold onto power for that long speaks volumes. That he was able to stay on after these allegations surfaced says even more.
In the end, you might be seeking an endorsement from rank and file UFCW members, but the press release would have Renne's name on it.
