WASHINGTON (CBS/AP) Police in Montgomery County, Md. announced Monday that they have made an arrest in connection with the killing of beloved D.C. middle school principal Brian Betts. Capt. Paul Starks of the Montgomery County, Maryland, Police Department, said a 46-year-old woman was arrested on two counts of credit card misuse "in relation to the [Brian] Betts homicide," and said that investigators expect to make more arrests. Authorities would not disclose the woman's identity or reveal further details but added that two search warrants were served earlier Monday at separate Washington locations, near where Betts' SUV was found after he was killed.
"The circumstances surrounding his death generally have led investigators to believe this was not a random crime," Starks said. "There was no ransack. The front door was closed but unlocked. There was no forced entry in the home."
Police have narrowed the timeline of his murder to sometime the night of April 14th, after learning that he called his sister around 11 p.m. that night to check in with her. His SUV was found a day later. Betts was found shot to death in his Silver Springs, Md. home, about 12 miles outside of Washington, D.C., April 15. Co-workers became worried after the educator, who had just arrived at a long-troubled urban school, didn't show up for work that morning, according to the Washington Post. News of the arrest came two days after more than 300 family, friends, students and colleagues gathered at the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Md. to mourn an educator regarded as a visionary and innovator.
Among the mourners was a group of 9th graders who liked Betts so much that they lobbied the school system to stay at Shaw Middle School for an extra year as 9th graders.
