'Massive' Protests Planned at Germantown Abortion Clinic

GERMANTOWN, Md. (WUSA) -- National anti-abortion activists are planning to lay siege to a Gemantown clinic as a Nebraska doctor who performs controversial late-term abortions is planning to see patients there. "We're going to show our outrage at this," said Troy Newman of Operation Rescue from the group's Kansas headquarters. Newman is planning a press conference and protest Monday. Dr. Leroy Carhart is the most prominent of the handful of doctors in the U.S. who perform late-term abortions on women up to 26-weeks pregnant. He has been the subject of death threats and protests. His colleague Dr. George Tiller was murdered in Kansas last year. Carhart is moving his late-term abortion practice to other states after Nebraska outlawed the procedure. A spokesman for the Germantown Reproductive Health Services clinic announced Carhart would begin seeing patients there next week.

Why don't you show pictures of the aborted children- When will the media show the images and let the people know the full story?

Why don't you tell the story of Carhart's incompetent and illegal acts? Why this man is still allowed to endanger women's lives is beyond me. Legalizing abortion did not clean up this mess; it only gave him license to exploit more people.

"In 2009, several Carhart employees came forward to tell of illegal and unethical practices at Carhart’s Bellevue, Nebraska, abortion clinic. Three women submitted affidavits to the Attorney General’s office, which, along with the Nebraska Department of Health, launched ongoing investigations of Carhart’s abortion business. Since then several other informants have come forward to expose Carhart’s abortion abuses. Allegations include unlicensed workers illegally performing medical tasks, illegal post-viability abortions, drug violations, financial malfeasance, and that there was often dried blood on medical instruments. They indicated that Carhart had poor personal hygiene and rarely washed his hands between patients.

Carhart works out of a run-down converted auto garage in suburban Omaha. In 2009, his abortion clinic caught on fire due to his negligence and unsafe storage practices. While restoration and construction work was still being done on the dilapidated structure, Carhart illegally and dangerously began conducting abortions using a generator and an extension cord without proper inspections or even an occupancy permit for the building. Pro-lifers reported Carhart, and the city ordered him to shut down until proper electrical services could be restored and the proper permits could be issued. This incident shows an “above the law” attitude and complete disregard for the lives and safety of his patients.

Records on file with the NDH show that Carhart has falsified entries on patient charts, interrupted abortions due to fatigue or exhaustion (fallen asleep during abortions procedures), engaged in personal phone conversations in the middle of abortions, and failed to train his staff on infection control protocols.

During an 18 month period of time, Operation Rescue documented ten incidents where abortion patients were rushed by ambulance to a local hospital for emergency care. Carhart was involved in over half of them. After the incidents began to attract the attention of the legislature and the Board of Healing Arts, Carhart was ordered to dangerously transport botched abortion patients to the hospital in private vehicles."
